Roy Lindell was an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's organized crime task force. He spent two years from 1994 to 1996 undercover in the Chicago Outfit's Las Vegas operation under the alias "Lucky Goshen." In that capacity he managed Dolly's strip club and passed money to Anthony Aliso to be laundered.

In September of 1996, Harry Bosch suspected "Goshen" of involvement in the murder of Aliso. Lindell was arrested by Las Vegas Metro Police for the murder of Aliso, at which time the gun used to shoot Aliso was found in his bathroom by LAPD detective Harry Bosch.

Joseph Marconi had Eleanor Wish put in a safe house outside Las Vegas in order to test whether Goshen would talk to the police. Bosch threatened to shoot Goshen unless he told where Eleanor was being kept. Goshen told Bosch who then rescued Wish.

Lindell was extradited to Los Angeles, where he was released from custody. The FBI was convinced that Bosch had planted the gun in Lindell's house in order to make an airtight case against him, and they blamed Bosch for destroying their undercover operation. Lindell and other FBI agents attended a meeting with Bosch concerning the allegations that Bosch had planted the gun. Goshen later returned to Las Vegas to participate in the surveillance of Silver State National Bank where a major shootout occurred.

After the Las Vegas operation concluded, Lindell remained at the bureau's Los Angeles field office. In April of 1999, Lindell coordinated with Bosch and the LAPD in the investigation into the murder of civil rights attorney Howard Elias. Later he transferred to the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) which is the bureau's equivalent of Internal Affairs.

Some time in the late 1990's he became romantically involved with another agent, Martha Gessler, which was ironic because of his position in OPR. When Gessler disappeared without a trace in March of 2000, Lindell attempted to continue the investigation. He was warned off by the Department of Homeland Security and he complied.

In October of 2002, Lindell and Bosch met again. Lindell called Bosch Podjo, and he mentioned that he saw Eleanor Wish at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. When Lindell learned that Bosch had revived the investigation of the murder of Angella Benton and the armed robbery of a movie set, he asked Bosch to look into what happened to Gessler. They clash at times, but in the end they are united by their need to know what happened to Gessler. He surreptitiously allowed Bosch to see the file on Gessler and encouraged Bosch to keep going despite threats from the FBI and DHS. Bosch and Lindell later found Gessler's shallow grave in a remote part of Griffith Park.

Adaptation[]

In the series Bosch there is a FBI Special Agent Luke Goshen who has a similar story to Lindell's character. They are both assigned to work undercover in organized crime but in the series the Goshen character infiltrates an Armenian gang.
