A best-selling book describing the the Beauty Shop Slasher murders was written by Los Angeles Times journalist Joel Bremmer. It was based on a case solved by Harry Bosch and his unnamed partner at that time. The slasher, Harvard Kendal, killed seven women, all beauty shop owners or employees, in one year in the San Fernando Valley.

The book was adapted into a movie-of-the-week, which in turn inspired a television spin-off. Bosch and his partner were each paid $50,000 by Universal studio for the right to use their real names in the movie and for providing technical assistance. They received an additional $50,000 for the spin-off. Bosch used his money to buy his house. His partner used to money to retire and move to Ensenada, Mexico.
